Watch The Emotional Moment This Lost Senior Dog Reunites With Her Human

When Mitchell County Animal Rescue, Inc. employees responded to a report on July 5 about a fearful dog found beside a highway, they assumed she’d run away due to the night before’s fireworks. They had no idea they’d be confronted with a dog who had been listed on their “lost” board for almost a month.

A couple of Good Samaritans watching a neighborhood fireworks display the night before noticed the shadow of an animal run around their car, then hide underneath it. Marilyn Williams, one of the Good Samaritans, told The Dodo, “We believed she was a fox.”

They quickly concluded the animal was a dog, and they could tell by her eyes that she needed assistance. “She looked terrified,” Williams observed.

The terrified pup initially refused to move from beneath the automobile. But the pair persisted, and the dog eventually ran out and leaped directly into their car via the driver’s side door, safe and well.

Williams and her husband took her in for the night, giving her food and water and cleaning up a little scrape on her face. The adorable dog remained remarkably calm throughout.

Williams described her as “shy and timid.” “She never barked a single time.” She never said anything.”

Following a restful night’s sleep, the couple contacted Mitchell County Animal Shelter and took in the peaceful pooch, hoping to reunite her with her owners.

Employees at the shelter identified the dog as Fiona, a senior canine who had gone missing a month earlier on a family trip. She was even on one of the “lost” posters that was attached to their front door.

Employees validated Fiona’s identity by scanning her for a microchip before calling her mother to inform her of the good news. Fiona, who had been as quiet at the shelter as she had been in Williams’ house, perked up for the first time when her mother walked in.

“When Fiona heard her, she got very excited,” a shelter employee told The Dodo.

Fiona’s tail didn’t stop wagging when she saw her mother. You can see their touching reunion here:

Fiona is now safe at home with her family, and while Williams and her family miss the adorable pooch they met that night, they’re relieved she’s back where she belongs.

“It’s just a very wonderful finish to a very special narrative,” Williams explained.
