This Heartbroken Shelter Dog Can’t Control Her Happiness When She’s Adopted Into Her Forever Home
When Eva arrived at the Hoke Country Animal Shelter in North Carolina, she looked as if she had given up on life. For no obvious reason, Ava had been abandoned by her former owner, and all of a sudden, her life as she knew it was over.
The only good thing her previous owners did for Eva was to leave her at a shelter, where she at least had a chance of a fresh beginning with a new family. But in her early days at the shelter, Ava didn’t want to go on anymore.

A shelter employee, Kristi Pylant, who was on shift when Ava arrived, recalls how dejected the pup was when she realized she’d been abandoned:
“She was absolutely terrified and sad, understandably. After spending time with her, we became buddies.”
While she didn’t know it at the time, Ava was about to start a new chapter in her life. One that would save her from desperation and show her that there was light at the end of the tunnel.

Earlier in April, a visitor to the North Carolina shelter decided to take Ava home and give her what she so dearly yearned: another chance at a forever home.
Kristi, who was the staff member who welcomed Ava into the shelter, was also on duty when it was time to say goodbye. And she recalls that the Ava who left with her new owners was unrecognisable as the same dog who arrived at the shelter, broken and dejected not so long ago.
But Ava didn’t leave without saying goodbye to Kristi, who had made such an effort to cheer the dog up throughout her short stay. Approaching Kirsti, Ava held her paw out as a way of saying thank you for all the love she received while she was in the shelter.
While Ava’s story goes to show the depths of despair that dogs sink to when they’re abandoned by their owners, it also shows the incredible work that shelter staff do all around the world to help make dogs feel better while they wait for their forever home.
It also goes to show that, while not all stories have a happy ending, dogs that have been abandoned at shelters often get another chance at a happy ever after.
We all hope that Ava is enjoying life in her new forever home, and she’s starting to remember that life is indeed worth living.
Good luck, Ava!
