This Guy Camps Out At Shelter So He Can Adopt His Favorite Dog

When Dr. Brian Eberhart first met Elliot, he knew he’d go out of his way to make sure the dog came home with him.

The border collie puppy was found as a stray at Palm Springs Animal Shelter in early March. He was shy and afraid of most people, yet his sorrowful eyes warmed everyone’s hearts.

Elliot was placed in a foster home to acclimatize to his new life as an inside dog, and it was there that he met Dr. Eberhart, a retired orthodontist. “Dr. Eberhart’s neighbor was Elliot’s foster guardian, so he had already met Elliot when he was in foster and had the opportunity to get to know and fall in love with him,” Palm Springs Animal Shelter marketing and communications manager Anthony Mercurio told The Dodo.

Dr. Eberhart made sure Elliot was the first in line at the shelter when he became available for adoption.

Employees at the shelter were taken aback when they arrived at work early that morning to discover Dr. Eberhart seated in a folding chair by the front door, reading a book. On the other hand, Elliot was worth the wait for Dr. Eberhart.

“We saw Dr. Eberhart camped out in front of the shelter… and discovered he was there to adopt Elliot,” Mercurio explained. “Others came by as well that morning, but when they realized we didn’t open until 1 p.m. that day, they gave up and went.”

Dr. Eberhart didn’t leave his perch until Elliot arrived, and the tiny dog couldn’t contain his joy when he discovered who was waiting for him. “From the start, it was a cheerful and playful meet and greet,” Mercurio remarked. “Elliot acted as if he were reuniting with an old friend, and it was clear to us that there was a connection there!”

Elliot went home with Dr. Eberhart that day and was christened Leo — an acronym for “Love Each Other.” Since finding his forever family, the small puppy has always wanted to be near his new mom and dad, whether it’s snuggling on the couch or biting at his dad’s heels.

“He is a smart, playful, and cheerful boy who must keep his eyes on his humans at all times,” Mercurio said.

Mercurio and everyone who has followed Leo and Dr. Eberhart’s journey can see that they will have the happiest life together.
