Blue, a stray dog, was found wandering the streets of Washington County in early April, and the Washington County Animal Shelter received a call. The pit bull mix was brought to the shelter by an animal control officer.
Blue, a homeless dog, seemed to have a soft spot for everyone he met, no matter how long he had been living on the streets.
Puppy Shelter Executive Director Tammy Davis told The Dodo that she had never seen a happier dog. A little reserved at first, he was wary of other dogs, but as time went on, his love for people and the staff grew stronger.
There were no public visits allowed in the shelter due to COVID-19, therefore only appointments were allowed. Blue languished in his kennel for months, which turned out to be a gift in disguise.
The shelter used a video of Blue playing with his favorite toy to reach out to potential adopters on Facebook. A comment on the video said, “That’s my dog,” moments later.
Blue had gone missing from his Tennessee home six months before. His father searched frantically for him but was eventually forced to travel to Texas for employment. He feared he’d never see his dog again until a friend showed him a video of Blue on Facebook.
In order to verify the man claiming to be Blue’s owner was speaking the truth, Davis had to show that the dog was actually playing with Blue’s favorite shelter toy: A blue squeaky ball. In the course of our talk, he admitted that yes, he did have photos of his dog. The blue ball he used to play with as a child was his favorite toy, and he gave us photos of Blue playing with it at his house. He said, “It was insane.”
After traveling 1,200 miles to get his son, Blue’s father was ecstatic to see him again.
Dogs are known to form strong bonds with their human companions, Davis explained. When Blue first saw the scene, he thought, ‘Am I seeing things correctly?’ As soon as they kissed, the man broke down in tears; it was wonderful.”

New life in Texas awaits the two of them now that Blue has rejoined his father and they’re making the most of their time together.
A happy ending like that would be ideal for all animals, Davis stated. Having moments like this makes all of our hard work worthwhile.
