After 20 years in circus, neglected bear gets happy rescue

A poor bear, who has been forced to undergo the most difficult existence a wild animal may ever live, finally celebrates her moment of freedom. After spending over 20 years in a circus, where she had the saddest life, the bear named Cholita comes to where she belongs — in the outdoors, and her reaction is breathtaking!

The ordeal began when the now 25-year-old spectacled bear (an endangered species) was a cub. Cholita was taken away from her mother and ended up in a Peruvian circus. Since then, she has been forced to live in tiny cages, from which she can only escape when she performs for people. Worse, the abuse she received during her stay there was indescribable. Decades later, she still bears the scars of that difficult existence.

When officials discovered that the circus was operating illegally, they removed all of the animals, giving the unhappy bear a glimmer of hope. Cholita, on the other hand, did not get her chance to enjoy freedom because she was transported from the circus to a zoo, and all hope seemed to be lost for the neglected animal.

But, ten years later, everything changed when Jan Creamer, president of Animal Defenders International (ADI), unintentionally learnt about Cholita’s story. Creamer was determined to find her a better home and only stopped when the bear was free. Cholita was initially relocated at an ADI rescue center before being brought to her ultimate home – the Taricaya Ecological Reserve, a location she can call home because the area is known as a natural habitat for spectacled bears.
